![]() ![]() ![]() The subject of this sketch was married in 1850, to Eliza Gries, by whom he had five sons and five daughters. They commenced life in a log cabin, he remaining with his parents until the death of his father in 1844 his mother lived three years longer and died in 1847. When he was but three months old, his father moved to Ohio and settled in Ashland county, three miles northwest of Ashland, on a farm adjoining Mr. "John Ferrell, son of Obediah, was born in Beaver county, Pennsylvania, in 1816. There are 113 artificial inland lakes in or partially within Ohio, with a surface area greater than 100 acres (40 ha). The difference in the number of lakes estimated by USEPA and ODNR is likely related to numerous small ponds (high number, small acreage) not detected on the 1:100,000 scale maps. The United States Environmental Protection Agency estimated (from an electronic file generated from 1:100,000 scale maps) that Ohio has 5,130 lakes totaling 188,461 acres (76,267 ha). Swimming, fishing, and/or boating are permitted in some of these lakes, but not all. These 2,200 include both public and private lakes. According to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, there are approximately 50,000 lakes and small 5 acres (2.0 ha) or greater, with a total surface area of 134,000 acres (54,000 ha).
